Empowering equitable hiring
The goal of this initiative is to create and share a repository of resources with hiring managers and other University leaders to encourage an understanding of equity issues in hiring as well as providing easy and actionable steps to mitigate them.
Every step in the hiring process has the potential to invoke biases, which undermine the University’s mission of a diverse and inclusive workforce. This includes personal biases (hiring manager, committee members, etc.); cultural biases (based on the overall work environment in the team or organization), and structural and systemic biases that impact candidates before they ever apply for a job.
This initiative will consider each step involved in the hiring process, and…
- Identify the common sources of bias that can influence hiring outcomes
- Review techniques and practices, especially those backed by research, that may be used to mitigate these biases
- Generate a library of resources that can be used to facilitate more equitable hiring practices and/or to educate those involved on the importance of doing so
- Collaborate with University HR to ensure alignment with IU policy, and to offer those resources effectively throughout the institution
